In 1927 a few of the local residents who were perturbed by the total lack of protection for bathers on the uMhlanga bathing beach called a meeting of interested parties and formed the first voluntary surf lifesaving club on the North Coast”. The uMhlanga Lifesaving Club has a photo album dated 1936/1937 of lifesavers training on the main beach with a club flag clearly displaying the letters URSLC.

Read MoreDurban Surf Lifesaving Club was formed 90 years ago on 28th June 1927 at a meeting in the Mayor’s parlour and is proud to be recognised as the first lifesaving club to be formed, not only in Durban, but in South Africa.
Since its inception Durban Surf has been located at North Beach, Durban, a magnificent playground for ocean and surf enthusiasts.
